Item description: A Tissot so-called ‘Big hand’ yachting Navigator watch dating from 1972. Typical large stainless steel case with single central crown. The dial in black, and with the Tissot brand name and logo. Applied battons. Calender at the 3.0 position. The watch with so-called ‘Big hand’, since the minute had in particularly large on this Navigator watch, so it can be seen clearly whilst sailing. The single rotational 0-60 bakalite bezel in black and red. The crown with Tissot logo. Screw on case-back. To the inside, a Tissot automatic movement. The watch retaining its original stainless steel strap with Tissot name in relief to the deployment buckle.
Case size: 40mm x 35mm
Condition report: Overall excellent condition. Close to perfect case. Beautiful original dial with light aging to the luminous hour battons. Close to perfect bakelite bezel ring. Case-back with satined and polished finish, free from any major scratches. Stainless steel strap in clean condition . Working condition, and recently undergone a full service. The timepiece may have been opened, so it should not be used near moisture or water without being checked by a qualified watchmaker.
Background to Tissot: Tissot was founded in 1853 by Charles-Félicien Tissot and his son, Charles-Émile Tissot, in the Swiss city of Le Locle, in the Neuchâtel area of the Jura Mountains. Tissot introduced the first mass-produced pocket watch as well as the first pocket watch with two time zones in 1853. Later in 1929, they produced the first anti-magnetic watch. Charles-Emile Tissot left for Russia in 1858 and succeeded in selling their savonnette pocket watches across the Russian Empire. Tissot merged with the Omega watch making family in 1930, and Tissot-Omega watches from this era are sought after by collectors.
Tissot are well known as an official timekeeper for the world championships in various sporting events. In 1938 they were the official timers for the Swiss Downhill Skiing, and by the 1950s were the official timers for the world championships of cycling, motorcycling, fencing and ice hockey. The company also became the official sponsors for the Formula 1 teams, Lotus, Renault and Sauber. Today, collectors are keen to acquire Tissot’s range of world time wristwatches, that were brought out in the late 1950s, and carried through to the 1970s. Likewise, their Navigator range are very desirable.
