An incredible rarity for the Mercedes-Benz Obsessive !
Particularly well known for their Porsche Design Watches, Orfina were selling to another German car manufacturer during the 1960s – Mercedes-Benz. Back then, Mercedes-Benz were rewarding high-mileage owners, as a part of their marketing strategy. Orfina were contracted to provide watches which were given to owners who had driven more than a million kilometers in their Mercedes-Benz.
Item description: Orfina stainless steel case with handsome heavy grooved tear drop style lugs. The watch with classic mat silvered finish, and with polished golden hour markers. Subsidiary seconds at the traditional 6.0 clock position. Polished golden hands. Immediately below the 12.0 clock position is the Mercedes-Benz logo , along with the designation, 1 Mio.KM. The crown with Orfina logo. The case-back with factory sticker stating Incabloc protected. Manual wind movement. Period black leather strap with stainless steel non-branded buckle.
Case size: 45mm x 35mm
Condition report: New old stock condition. Original polished and satined finishing to case remaining. Dial perfect. Case-back perfect, and still with manufacturer’s Incabloc Protected sticker in place. working condition. The timepiece may have been opened, so it should not be used near moisture or water without being checked by a qualified watchmaker.
Background to the Orfina watches: The Swiss Company, Orfina S.A. started manufacturing watches in 1922. During the 1960s they received many orders from Mercedes-Benz, but gained fame from initially manufacturing the range of Porsche Design watches which were launched in 1972.
Special notes: Orfina watches have been worn by many actors. Famous examples are, Lewis Collins’ character in Who Dares Wins wears a Porsche design Orfina. Martin Shaw’s character Ray Doyle in The Professionals, episode Blackout wears a black Porsche design Orfina. Tom Cruise wears an Orfina in Top Gun
Chuck Norris and Lee Marvin, both wear Orfina watches in The Delta Force. Brigitte Nielsen wears an Orfina watch during the robbery in Beverly Hills Cop II.
Provenance: Copy of Orfina archive slip stating this watch was manufactured 4th November 1962, and bore the Mercedes-Benz 1 Mio Km logo and designation to the dial.
